Monday Morning Commute: The Power of FU Money w/Diania Merriam

In today’s episode, I chat with Diania Merriam, the Founder of The EconoME Conference, also known as the “Ted talks of the FIRE Movement (Financial Independent Retire Early). She is also the host of the popular podcast, Optimal Finance Daily.

Have you ever read a piece of information that totally transformed your life? Well, that was the case for Diania!

Some years back, she found a blog that completely changed her life and relationship with money. She even describes it as a “refreshing punch in the face”– isn’t that great?

With Diania’s newfound knowledge, she was able to get out of $30k of debt in 11 months! After this, she used her born-again financial freedom to negotiate a remote working arrangement with her employer, take a 2 month sabbatical to walk 500 miles across northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago, and launch her own business. She is an absolute rockstar!

Diania now saves 60% of her income and is on track to be financially independent by the time she’s 40 years old.

“Money is only as valuable as your clarity of how you’re going to use it and your comfort level of how much is enough.” – Diania Merrium

Through her financial awakening, Diania quickly came to realize that “luxury is a weakness” because once you become adapted to living a lavish lifestyle, you have to then maintain such an income to continue affording that lifestyle!

As you can tell, Diania is such an inspiration into guiding all of us into learning how to be more mindful and grateful for the little things in life.

Within this episode, she dittos something I say all of the time — “How can you manage a million dollars if you can’t manage $1000?”  This is an important realization because most think they will manage money when they have a lot of it. Without realizing that they don’t have a lot of it because they suck at managing it!

And finally, Diania talks about the Power of FU Money. She shares part of her story about how her new relationship, mindset, and practice around money enabled her to leave a bad situation. Having money gives one a lot more options. That is one good reason for having it (among so many others!)… If you’re pumped to discover this woman’s tricks, then take a listen!

In this conversation, we talk everything about what it takes to be as financially aware as possible.

  • FIRE (Financial Independent Retire Early)
  • Less is more
